Top Ten Chart November 2008
Bah… I’ve been lazy. Not a ton of new music for me. I’ve been doing a lot of used record shopping like normal and this is what I’ve been playing.
1. Stefan Goldmann – Lunatic Fringe – Haunting vocal, crisp production, and one of those great tracks that kinda defies genre. Love his production work.
2. Modeselektor – Dancing Box (Sleeparchive Remix) – Amazing remix, I’ve been looking for it for a while and I found it at a used bin out in Seattle a little while ago. Straight up minimal madness. I like to peak sets with this.
3. Metope – Rabum – Good glitchy techno from one of my favorite producers as of late. This is on a pretty good 2×12 that I found lying around and honestly everything on it is pretty good. But this one is my favorite. Little bits of madness shine through on this one.
4. Volga Select – Transe – My big problem with modern electro is that it’s too over the top. This takes nods from some of the more subtle French producers (which makes sense because Joakim is on the flip) and makes French electro sound classy as shit. Amazing little track.
5. Rodamaal – Insomnia (Âme Remix) – Deep as fuck. Ame does it again on this track. I don’t really think I need to explain anything else.
6. Simon Baker – Plastik – I mixed this into the Rodamaal track last week and it make me remember why I love this track. I know it’s played but it still sounds amazing.
7. Roxy Music – The Thrill Of It All (M.A.N.D.Y. Vs. Booka Shade’s “I’m Your Pusher Man” Re-Work) – I went on this Roxy Music kick a little while ago and this remix updates it perfectly for what I do. Proves that when the Get Physical boys get it right it’s amazing.
8. Fast Eddie – Let’s Go (Fast Eddie Mix) – Found this at a antique store for a quarter and couldn’t pass it up. Good Jackin house with touches of his acid past.
9. Tiga – Pleasure From The Bass (Joakim Remix) – Joakim is the fucking man! Sorry, but I’m a sucker for the italio disco right now. Plus the vocal breaks up the techno seriousness nicely.
10. Glimpse – 100% Shiraz (Undo Remix) – Undo is a incredible producer that everyone needs to keep their eyes on. This almost goes proggy for me but he keeps the whole production dark enough to make this a perfect closing track that leaves everyone wanting just a little bit more.
Back From Deployment! Yay!
Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve updated but I was out on my lil submarine for quite (3 months) and now I’m back and ready to rock!
Ok, not so much rock as clean up the basement.
But back to the important news. I’ve been working on a lot of music. A LOT.
And I’ll be posting it here soon. As soon as I get my internet connection fixed (doing this at a cafe right now.)
Thanks for poppin by. I’ll be throwing stuff up here soon.
Bought A House. Fun With Ableton. Friend Retires.
Nothing new today. I finally signed the last bit of paperwork for the house I’m buying and I’ll be getting the keys to it tomorrow. Yay for me. Here’s a pic.

Getting this is the end of a lot of stress. The place is all packed up and I’m not as… err… fumbling around the internet as normal today. So nothing really new to report on that point of my life. Other than that I’ve just been playing with Ableton Live 7 constantly. I’ve been able to get a lot of hints on productions from some of the music magazines that come out all the time to start really improving on exactly how I’m using the program. The Akai MPD24 is really helping out in that department as well. I’ve almost got the finishing touches on a track that I’ll be posting soon. I just have to make sure that I like it before I put it up.
It was kind of weird today because I had to watch a friend of mine retire from the Navy today. It was kind of striking to me that after 20 years of service to the Navy that all he really got was a small award that he had already received 6 times and a little bit of a goodbye from us. It’s cool though because we’re throwing him a retirement party this Saturday (with your truly DJing all the 80s rock classics). I’ve found that there are a lot of Blue Shirts that get shit on when it comes to retirement because of the extra effort that people have to go through. I’ve got a buddy down in Florida that never received his retirement flag because a certain person didn’t like him enough to file the paper work. I just hope that things go ok for him when he gets out. He helped me out of a weird situation about a year ago and just want him and his wife to get out and be happy.
Being sappy.
Here’s some Navy videos that make me laugh, nice to share them. For those in the military you will find these pretty funny. If your not in the military, well…. prepare to be confused.
Used Record Seattle Vol. 2
Another trip to Seattle, another small haul of awesome records. Today used tracks from both Easy Street Records & Everyday Music. I’m not going to post the rather large amount of 80s rock that I picked up but I will post the guilty pleasure trance I picked up.
I think my real goal here is to highlight all the awesome music you can get for cheap in this city.
Easy Street (only 1 this time)
Lawrence – Lowlights From The Past And Future [Mule Electronic] Cost: 3.00
Lawrence makes this lush and delicate techno/deep house that just feels warm. Always worth giving a listen to his work and this track is no different. Comes with a pretty good LoSoul remix as well.
If your not familiar with his work, here’s a more recent release of his that’s worth listening to.
Everyday Music (Pricier and less organized but if you search long enough you are going to find some gems)
Phil K Presents Y4K Part 2 [Distinctive Breaks] Cost 3.00
Sampler from his 2005 Y4K album, this EP is well worth it for a copy of Lusine’s Slur that does not require you to shell out for the full album on vinyl.
I:Cube – Ding Ding Ding [Versatile] Cost 2.60
First I:Cube release? Fuck Yeah! Great techy find. I:Cube has been a must listen producer for me ever since hearing their take on 99 & A Half.
not familar? here’s pretty cool interview with him from a little while ago.
The Aztec Mystic – Knights Of The Jaquar EP [UR] Cost 2.60
Do I really need to tell you about this? AMAZING FIND for 2.60. The track so good Sony tried to copy it. If you want to read about the drama head on over here.
Just Jack – Starz In Their Eyes [TVT] Cost 1.60
Poor man’s The Streets comes out of nowhere and pens a surprisingly good tune about how fickle pop fame can be. Complete with a prett good Ashley Beedle remix.
The Guilty Pleasure Section!
Tomaz Vs. Filterheadz – Sunshine Remixes [Intec] Cost 2.60
Huge a few years ago. It’s a great feelgood track for me.
Energy 52 – Cafe Del Mar [Arcade America] Cost 2.60
Come on! You know you liked the first Tranceport!
Grace – Not Over Yet [Perfecto] Cost 1.60
Ok, I give up my techno snob card. Fuck you, here’s the fucking awesome music video for it.
Thats all for now.
3 Videos I Love
Thought it might be cool to post 3 music videos that I can’t get enough of.
Up first…
LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great
Released as a single but kind of ignored in the onslaught of All My Friends. This one is better and the video punches you in the gut. It’s like what would happen if you could really see someone one last time.
Hope Of The States – Black Dollar Bills
I’d been listening to this song for years before discovering the guitarist killed himself before this got released. This is one of those bands who’s cd got better the more I grew up.
Plaid – Eyen
A song and video that are just strikingly beautiful. I became obsessed with this song last underway. When I make music I can only hope to make something a third as beautiful as this.
Free Downloads – Truckasauras
For those who don’t know Truckasauras are pretty damn cool. I got to see these guys play at Decibel Festival last year and they were the highlight of the night I went. Plus their local guys and locals always need love. Here, they’ve partnered up with the guys at Necodo.com guys to give you 2 free downloads from their new album “Tea Parties, Guns, and Valor.” Sweet. Plus you can get the whole album for a nice price of 9.99 (Including the banging remix of Fak!!! by Jerry Abstract). Come check em out!
So Click here to have you skull bashed in by new music!

Used Record Seattle Vol. 1
As most people who know me know, I hate buying records at full price. Hate it hate it hate it. One of my biggest issues with dance music is how accelerated it has become. People obsess over having the latest tracks because they think that it gives them an edge over the next dj. While this may be true during a lot of more popular music the fact is that dance music is a very faceless genre. Nobody cares if you have the latest and greatest tracks (even though keeping current in your knowledge of dance music is essential to remaining relevant.) The truth is that you can play a set of nothing but tracks from 5 or 6 years ago and no one will know the difference (except the really dance heavy people but if they judge you for playing great tracks you love from 5 years ago than fuck them). The real problem with Beatport is that it pushes the culture much much much faster than it has in recent years. Instead of a track having a 4 or 5 month life span, it’s pushed off to the side to make way for more music that comes out later that week. Instead of being a record on your shelf that you can revisit in a few years and remember why you loved it, it just becomes this file that you can easily delete to make room for the flavor of the month. I really fear that soon enough there isn’t going to be a way for classic music to be created because people are going to be so concerned with the next new thing that nothing is going to have time to settle in. So about once every 2 weeks I drag my ass out to the city to scrounge through the bins at all of the shops to find the best records I can for as cheap as possible. This Thursday (May 8th) I went out to Easy Street Records (a personal favorite for finding good used records.) Here are the results.

Metaboman – Rausgeflogen Ep [Musik Krause] Cost: 99 cent
Fantastic Ep off of Music Krause from about 2003, think Robag and friends. Glitchy stuff for all.
The Forlorn – Curses Upon Curses [Morris Audio Citysport Edition] Cost: 99 cent
One off release from Brian Zentz, my favorite former Virginia DJ now living out in Portland, is seriously awesome. A step back in the level of hardness compared to his normal productions, this is one of those tracks that sounds more relevant now that it’s been around for a little while. The B-side, Outpatient-1 comes out tops here.
Tokyo Black Star – Still Sequence EP [Innervisions] Cost: 2.00

Innervisions is one of the best labels around for fans of tech house and these guys had an amazing track called Blade Dancer that was the closing track on Carl Craig’s Fabric. This isn’t quite as good as that but the stunning remix from Ame and Dixon is the real highlight though it may be a little too slow for some people’s sets.
Laurie Anderson – Oh Superman (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix) [White] Cost: 2.00
What a find! This has been a staple in M.A.N.D.Y.’s sets for years, I’ve even heard it in their live sets before. A remix of a classic song by Laurie Anderson, I’ve been looking for this since hearing Naha close a V-day set at Rebar with the original. This bootleg came out in 2005 but didn’t see an official release until 2007’s 5 Years of Get Physical comp. This shows the Get Physical boys at their best.
Thanks for reading! More to come.

Last Night @ Broken Disco (Thank You Seattle, Fuck You Yuppies)
Thank you Seattle!
Last night was great for. I really have not had that much of a good time playing for a crowd in quite some time. Packed room by 11? Check! Crazy Dancers? Check! Cool ass friends who came to see me play? Check. The outpouring of support was great.
It’s a shame I had to leave early though. Had to get some friends home. But the real shame is what happened over at Nuemos. The fire marshal came through Nuemos and shut down about 1/2 the club prior to a Knight Riders party. I’m really happy that the promoters here are willing to work with each other and bring Travis’s guests into the lineup but it’s really fucked up how the city is targeting the clubs out here. I was pretty worried at one point that we were going to hear shit for having the volume up at Chop Suey. It shows how little respect that they have for the places that have revitalized Capitol Hill. Their going to force the parties out of that town that’s just bullshit.
Fucking condos.
So fuck you rich people who move into a cultural center full of parties and fun and then complain about where you moved.
